WhatsApp's voice chat functionality
WhatsApp, under the ownership of Meta, is set to roll out a novel voice chat feature designed to provide a more seamless method of connecting with extensive groups on the platform, aiming to minimize disruptions during these interactions. What started as a text-first messaging service is now rolling out an interesting group voice chat feature like platforms like Discord, Telegram and Twitter Space.
Upon commencement of a voice chat, members within a group will receive a push notification, diverging from the conventional call initiation.
The participation roster for the voice chat can be monitored through a banner positioned at the bottom of the screen.
In an update, the messaging platform clarified that voice chats will automatically terminate when all participants exit. Furthermore, if there's a lapse of 60 minutes without additional participants joining the initial or final member, the chat will conclude.
This innovative feature caters to groups ranging from 33 to 128 people and is exclusively accessible on primary devices, as per the company's statement.
WhatsApp highlights that members outside the voice chat can view the profiles of those engaged in the conversation via the chat header and the Calls tab.
Presently, WhatsApp's voice call functionality accommodates up to 32 participants. During an ongoing voice chat, call controls can be effortlessly accessed from the top of the chat interface, allowing for simultaneous text messaging.
Anticipated to be introduced in the forthcoming weeks, the voice chat feature will be progressively available on both iOS and Android platforms.
Distinguishing Features in Comparison to Group Calls:
Silent Notifications: In contrast to traditional group calls that trigger a ringing on each member's phone, voice chats discreetly inform group members without any audible alerts.
Self-Managed Participation: Unlike the conventional practice of manually adding participants in group calls, members have the autonomy to seamlessly join or exit the conversation at their discretion.
Automated Conclusion: In the absence of any participants and an empty chat for 60 consecutive minutes, the voice chat will autonomously terminate, providing a hands-free conclusion.
Subtle Alerts: While the customary incoming call ringtone is absent, a discreet push notification will subtly notify users of an ongoing voice chat.
